Summer 2011
While second-year students were working at their summer internships, TMP contract completion proceeded at a frenzied pace. Although KGI provides a standard template (including, among other elements, confirmation that any intellectual property developed belongs to the sponsor), in the end each signed agreement between the company and the school is unique.
Within the TMP Year, August is the month of team formation. More art than science, formation considers several elements: project skill sets, sponsor company input, student rankings and faculty perspective.
To gather company input, KGI provides corporate sponsors with resumes of all students and invites the liaisons to select those they believe will be best suited to the project-with the caveat that there is no guarantee a pick will make it to the team.
For student preferences, second-year Master of Bioscience (MBS) and Post-doctoral Professional Masters (PPM) students receive a detailed packet for each project. These packets contain company background, preliminary project description (which may have been updated a couple of times since its first submission months earlier), corporate liaison's bio, minutes from summer information calls and other relevant information.
Corporate and student preferences combine with other faculty input to suggest preliminary teams. Faculty then conduct one final review and, if appropriate, modify team membership. Once approved by KGI, the teams are announced.
