Admissions Information
How to Apply
Students interested in applying to the joint CGU-KGI PhD in Computational and Systems Biology MUST first make an inquiry with the Office of Admissions at admissions[at symbol]kgi.edu or call (909) 607-8590. Students must complete a formal paper application in order to be considered for admission.
Admissions Requirements
To be admitted to the Joint PhD Program, an applicant must have:
- A baccalaureate degree in mathematics, or a scientific or engineering discipline from an accredited institution. Applications from outstanding candidates with degrees in other areas may be accepted conditionally; normally, these students will be expected to take, during their first year of enrollment, the necessary coursework to eliminate deficiencies in their backgrounds.
- An undergraduate Grade Point Average of at least 3.0, and of at least 3.5 in any previous graduate work, for the application to be competitive.
- Suitable scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), with acceptable performance in the Verbal and Quantitative sections.
- Written and spoken proficiency in English.

Application Fee
Our non-refundable application fee is $75. A check payable to Keck Graduate Institute must accompany your application. Please be sure your name appears on the check.
Standardized Tests
We require every applicant to submit valid and official scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). For more information about the GRE please visit www.ets.org/gre.
International Students must also submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Students who have studied at a U.S university or college for more than 2 years and those from a country where English is the official or primary language are exempt from this requirement. For more information about the TOEFL please visit www.ets.org/toefl.
Letters of Recommendation
Request letters of recommendation from three people who can evaluate your qualifications and potential for success in an interdisciplinary research program. we prefer that at least two of your recommenders be professors with whom you have worked closely. The third can be from an employment supervisor who is in the position to evaluate your work. The Office of Admissions will also accept letters submitted from a central recommendations service at your college. Recommenders should sent letters directly to the Office of Admissions. Letters received directly from a student should be sealed and have the letter writer's signature across the flap of the envelope.
Personal Statement
The personal statement gives you an opportunity to describe your academic, career, and personal objectives. Please use the statement to outline the basis of your interest in KGI's program, to demonstrate your potential for making research contributions in the biosciences, and to bring to the attention of the Admissions Committee other significant matters. Please limit your response to the equivalent of three double-spaced typewritten pages.
