Student Loans
Low interest student loans with favorable repayment terms are available to both domestic and international KGI students to help offset expenses not covered by KGI scholarships or personal financial resources. Applications for these loan programs are accessed at the links in the following sections for both U.S. citizens and permanent resident aliens or for international students.
U.S. Citizens and Permanent Resident Aliens
U.S. citizens and permanent resident aliens are eligible to borrow student loans under the U.S. Department of Education's Federal Direct Loan Program. The following types of federal student loans are available to graduate students. Each is subject to a maximum borrowing limit per academic year:
|
Federal Loan Program |
Maximum Borrowing Limit per Academic Year |
|
Unsubsidized Stafford Loans |
$20,500.00 |
|
GradPLUS |
The difference between the total cost of attendance and all other scholarship and loan support. |
In order to borrow from any of these two types of federal student loans, students must complete the following:
- Fill out your FAFSA. Your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form must be completed each academic year by accessing the following link: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/
If you have submitted an online FAFSA in a past year, you will need to use the same PIN that the FAFSA system assigned to you. When applying through FAFSA, please indicate that you are applying for the 2013–2014 academic year and be sure to apply as soon as possible in order to avoid delays. KGI’s FAFSA School Code is G38533. - Sign your Master Promissory Note. Once you have been approved to take out federal loans you will need to sign a Master Promissory Note. You can do this at the following site: https://studentloans.gov/myDirectLoan/index.action
Please note: If you are planning to take out Grad Plus loans on top of the Subsidized and Unsubsidized loans, you will need to sign a separate Master Promissory Note for Grad Plus Loans. - Complete Entrance Counseling. For those students who are new to direct loans and/or Grad Plus loans, you will need to complete entrance counseling. This can be done at the link below and will cover the rights and responsibilities of taking out student loans.

Once you have completed the above items you will be emailed your Financial Aid Award Letter which details the maximum borrowing amount that you are eligible for.

The master promissory note is available below as a PDF file. Please submit a signed and completed master promissory note to Sofia Toro, KGI's Financial Aid Officer. KGI International Student Loan FAQ ![]()
International students may apply for a private loan using the links below. Students need either sufficient credit history in the U.S. in their own name or a cosigner for their loan application with sufficient credit history who is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien. The lender determines the maximum loan available based on the results of the credit review. An approved private student loan can also serve as part of the financial guarantee for issuing a U.S. immigration form I-20.
