Since the launch of the Apple iPad last April, it seems as though manufacturers have recognized that the tablet could be the next big thing in mobile devices. Apple’s first competitors come from Samsung and Hewlett Packard.

A recent article by the LA Times explained how investigations have found that the effects of placebos used in clinical trials may not be as inconsequential as study designers may have intended. Researchers investigated 176 drug studies and found that the vast majority of these studies failed to mention the contents of the placebos used.

Heart rate, blood pressure, caloric intake, and even personality can now be measured and monitored by smart phone applications on the go. Blogger and writer for Wired Magazine, Gary Wolf recently gave a talk at a TED conference (Technology, Entertainment, and Design) describing how people are using mobile apps to measure these life metrics via biometric and pressure sensors.

Bioethics: Monsanto and the Extent of Patent Protection

If you’ve ever seen a documentary on food or agriculture (e.g. Food Inc.), you’ve probably walked away from it with a less than positive impression Monsanto Company. With a history highlighted by the creation of Agent Orange and recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone, as well as being linked with farmer suicides in India resulting from instances of Bt cotton failure, Monsanto has drawn masses of opposition.
