BioTECHnology – Novartis: there’s an app for that
Novartis, the international leader in the manufacture of vaccines and pharmaceutical products has partnered with Apple to develop a consumer iPhone application (app) called VaxTrak. The app is designed to help parents manage their families’ vaccines and preventative care, allowing parents to track their children’s vaccinations and get alerts when updates are due. The app can also be used to log insurance records and find local pharmacies where flu shots are available. So far, consumers have embraced the new technology that allows them to be more involved with the administration of their healthcare.
Since the release of VaxTrak, other pharmaceutical companies have taken note of Novartis’ example and created similar apps for consumers. Advances in technology have allowed for innovations in medical record keeping as well as this new wave of interest in smart phone applications that literally put healthcare at your fingertips.
These cutting edge innovations are characteristic of the fast-paced world of biotechnology. VaxTrak acts as a bridge between the company and the consumer – between the science of the product and the business of its application. It is in this overlap of space in the life sciences industry where hybrids like KGI students can effectively use business to sell science creating a win-win situation for the company as well as the consumer.
