Patents and Patent Law
Designed for industry professionals, this class will teach participants how to effectively use patents as part of an overall business strategy, as well as fundamental concepts in biotechnology patent practice. These include biotech patent law basics, patent preparation and prosecution overview, budgeting and efficient use of law resources, market exclusivity and market entry strategies, patent licensing issues, and a host of related issues geared toward optimizing patent value.
The class assumes a basic understanding of fundamental concepts in biotechnology, and is oriented toward biopharma, although other areas (agriculture, etc.) may be discussed. Real-world biotechnology examples are used for illustration, and class participation is encouraged. Please have a laptop available for in class exercises.

Business issues: In order to maximize return of R&D investment, companies need to ensure that a broad array of professionals (not merely scientists) is conversant with the patent system.
