Intramural Sports at KGI
Among the recreational activities that KGI students engage in are intramural sports. Unlike inter-collegiate sports, which are typically funded by schools and involve competition between teams from different universities or colleges, intramural (meaning "within walls") are sporting events organized within the same school or school system that promote competition and fun.
Within The Claremont Colleges (aka the 7 C's), there are two intramural leagues: Pomona-Pitzer, which involve Pomona College and Pitzer College; and CMS, which includes Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College and Scripss College. KGI students have the opportunity to participate in both of these leagues, competing against undergraduate and graduate students.
KGI has historically had a great reputation for sportsmanship and active participation in the CMS and Pomona-Pitzer leagues. Professor Matthew Croughan has been a staple in the KGI intramural program over the years, as a participant on the football, softball and dodge ball teams, and as a member of the defending champion bowling team.
At the beginning of each school year, students specify in a survey which sports they would like to participate in, and are then notified throughout the year by the KGI Intramural Chair when new leagues begin and when games are scheduled.
Soccer and football, among all sports available at the 7C's, have had the highest KGI student participation and traditionally been the most popular sports. Other sports KGI students have regularly been part of include softball, dodge ball and volleyball.
During the 2009-2010 academic year, KGI student teams won the championship in CMS Bowling and Pomona Football (undefeated), placed second in CMS Football and Pomona Basketball, and third in CMS Basketball and Pomona Softball. In 2010-2011, KGI teams have again excelled, winning the CMS Bowling championship and finishing second in Pomona Water Polo, CMS Football (co-ed), CMS Basketball, and Pomona Football. Additionally, KGI students third place in CMS Football (men).
"Intramural sports are a great outlet from the day to day activities of KGI, and provide a time for students from all classes and programs to get to know one another outside of the classroom," says Tyson Fetzer, KGI's intramural chair for 2010-2011. Fetzer was part of the Pomona Football championship squad, the first time KGI ever won a championship in the Pomona-Pitzer league. The team had a combined record of 13-1 over two years.
