Sommer earned his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College, a PhD in molecular biology from Rockefeller University in New York, and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania.  Until founding MEDomics in July 2008, he was director of the Departments of Molecular Genetics and Molecular Diagnosis at City of Hope, as well as founder and director of City of Hope's Clinical Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory.
