Course Detail

Year: First-year
Semester: Fall 2007
Course Number: ALS 350
Course Name: Finance
No. Units: .5
Faculty/Instructor: Henry Riggs

Long Description

The fall semester Finance course consists of 12 sessions plus a final exam.  The course should provide students sufficient background to understand the structure of accounting systems; to read, analyze, and draw conclusions from corporate financial statements; and to gain some understanding of budgeting and financial forecasting.  This understanding will be necessary for many other courses and projects at KGI.  The spring semester course introduces capital budgeting procedures and provides an introduction to corporate finance.  No prior background in accounting or finance is assumed.  Each semester’s course carries a “one-half course” credit.

Study Materials
Required:  Riggs, Henry, Understanding the Financial Score, Morgan and Claypool, 2006.

Course Management
Students are expected to attend all classes, arrive on time, and be well prepared.  Given the fast pace of this course, missing a session or failing to stay up with the reading, will result in falling hopelessly behind.

Active participation in class discussion is essential to the learning process in this course, and thus grades will reflect preparation and participation.  It is not sufficient to simply read the cases prior to class; students should work through the questions at the end of (most) cases to be certain that they are thoroughly prepared for the discussion.

Honor Code
Assignments to be handed in must be students’ own work.  However, students may discuss the homework with classmates and are encouraged to form groups to study the cases in preparing for class.  The final exam will be open book and notes and not proctored; students are expected to observe KGI’s honor code when taking the exam.

Prerequisites
No prior background in accounting or finance is assumed.
