In response to demand from the life science industry, KGI is developing and testing models of executive education. These are non-degree, non-credit programs that can be delivered at KGI or at a company site. One such model, “Business Basics for Scientists,” was created and piloted in fall 2005. This 18-hour program consisted of coursework in accounting, finance, general management, and business decision-making. Students were senior scientists from a pharmaceutical company, and were selected by their managers for participation in the pilot. Pilot results indicated robust satisfaction with the pilot and encouragement to launch on a broad market basis. Next steps are to further refine the curriculum and delivery model. Additional topics under review include biotechnology basics for non-scientists in life science companies, communication skills/negotiation, project management, forecasting and scenario planning. KGI encourages life science companies to collaborate on the development of customized offerings for both scientific/technical and business/commercial staff.
