Keck Graduate Institute

Partnerships with foundation donors signal others that an investment in Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences yields high returns, not only in the development of a new cadre of bioscience professionals, but also in setting high standards for educational excellence. Developing financial support for Keck Graduate Institute began with a $50 million founding grant from the W.M. Keck Foundation. Other foundation donors, attracted by KGI's unique vision, provided funding to develop KGI's core infrastructure, teaching laboratories and classrooms.

Foundation generosity validates the importance and relevance of KGI's professional Master of Bioscience (MBS) degree program and its small PhD program, which will be implemented soon to fit in tandem with the MBS program. Foundation support enables KGI to attract first-rate faculty who are interdisciplinary in both their backgrounds and their strengths in systems biology, computational biology, bioengineering, as well as in management, and bioethics. Foundations help break new ground in the biosciences by supporting the development of KGI's innovative curriculum. Support for cutting-edge research has already led to two spin-off companies from KGI's own laboratories. Foundation donors also help address the critical need for student scholarships and financial aid.

Keck Graduate Institute is a conduit for foundation donors to make significant contributions to the promise of biotechnology. Their generosity has the potential to reap substantial rewards for future generations as new vaccines, therapies, and other biotech products, now in trials, make their way to the marketplace over the next five to ten years.

KGI's office of Foundation Relations is responsible for identifying institutional projects that assist prospective foundation donors in carrying out their own philanthropic missions. Funding opportunities exist to support construction and equipment for teaching and research facilities, curriculum development, faculty recruitment, research, and student scholarships and financial aid. The office pursues opportunities with grant makers, prepares proposals, coordinates stewardship, prepares financial and narrative reports on grants received, and manages cultivation endeavors to secure long-term support for Keck Graduate Institute from foundation donors.
