In addition to Institutional support, KGI encourages students to apply for external scholarships to support their graduate study. Some programs that KGI students may qualify for are listed below. Science, Mathematics, And Research for Transformation Defense Scholarship for Service Program (SMART) for Undergraduate, Master's, and Doctoral Students in Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM): The Department of Defense (DoD) is proud to offer scholarships to undergraduate, master's and doctoral students who have demonstrated ability and special aptitude for training in Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) fields. The DoD also offers them career opportunities to continue their research as civilian employees of a DoD laboratory after graduation. National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship: The primary goal of the Program is to provide the United States with talented, doctorally-trained American men and women who will lead state-of-the-art research projects in disciplines of greatest benefit to national defense. Graduate and Professional Scholarships for College Seniors and Recent College Alumni from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation: The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Scholarship Program will award approximately 40 scholarships to seniors and recent graduates planning to attend graduate school for the first time starting in fall 2008. Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans: The purpose of The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans is to provide opportunities for continuing generations of able and accomplished New Americans to achieve leadership in their chosen fields. The Program is established in recognition of the contributions New Americans have made to American life and in gratitude for the opportunities the United States has afforded the donors and their family. Foreign Fulbright Graduate Student Program: A mainstay of America’s public-diplomacy efforts, the Fulbright Foreign Student Program brings citizens of other countries to the United States for Master’s degree or Ph.D. study at U.S. universities or other appropriate institutions. American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Scholarship: Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, have a minimum 3.0 GPA, and major in some field of science or engineering encompassed by the technical activities of AIAA. American Indian Science and Engineering Society Scholarship: Applicant must have a minimum 2.0 GPA, be enrolled full time, and submit transcript, essay, and letters of recommendation. Summer employment at an EPA facility and/or on an Indian reservation is also offered if resources are available. Gates Millennium Scholars Award from the United Negro College Fund (UNCF): Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and African-American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific-American, or Hispanic, have a minimum 3.3. GPA, and have applied to, been accepted at, or enrolled full time at an accredited college or university. Applicant must demonstrate significant financial need as defined by federal needs analysis formula and demonstrate leadership ability through participation in community service, extracurricular activities, or other activities. Applicant must be nominated by a teacher, principal, professor, dean, or program director. GlaxoSmithKline Company Science Achievement Award: Research-based pharmaceutical companies provide four scholarships per year to graduates of a UNCF member college or university with science-related majors who are enrolled or planning to enroll in a graduate degree program at any American college or university. Howard Hughes Medical Institute Predoctoral Fellowship in Biological Sciences: Applicant must submit GRE scores and be a U.S. citizen. If not a citizen, applicant must attend U.S. educational institution and submit TOEFL scores if English is not primary language. Applicant must have completed less than one year of post baccalaureate work toward a masters, Ph.D. or Sc.D. following completion of undergraduate or medical degree. Kappa Epsilon/AFPE/Nellie Wakeman Fellowship: Applicant must have completed one term of advanced studies in the pharmaceutical sciences, be a member in good financial standing of Kappa Epsilon, and be working toward a pharmacy M.S., a Ph.D., or a Pharm.D. (having previously earned a pharmacy B.S.). Financial need is considered. Applicant must have a definite plan to use the training to upgrade skills for career advancement, train for a new career, or to enter or re-enter the job market. Applicant must graduate within 24 months of date of scholarship. Officers of Wyeth-Ayerst and members of their immediate families are not eligible. Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago Academic Scholarship: Applicant must be Jewish, be legally domiciled in the Chicago metropolitan area, have a minimum "C" grade average, be a full-time student, demonstrate financial need, and show career promise. Selection is based upon financial need, personal statement, letters of recommendation, transcripts, work experience, and community involvement. Anna and Charles Stockwitz Children and Youth Grant from Jewish Family and Children's Services (JFCS)Applicant must be Jewish, demonstrate financial need, and be a resident of the Alameda Peninsula, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, or Sonoma County, Calif. Contact: 2150 Post Street, San Francisco, CA 94115, Phone: 415 446-1226 ARRL Scholarship Honoring Senator Barry Goldwater, K7UGA Applicant must have at least a novice class radio license and be attending a regionally accredited institution. Award for Scandinavians from the American-Scandinavian Foundation: Applicant must be a citizen of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, or Norway, and must be recommended by an ASF cooperating organization. Award is for study in the United States. Book, Tuition, and Comprehensive Supplement from the Francis A. Winch Fund: Selection is based upon achievement, need, purpose, and recommendations. Scholarship: Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident of Hispanic descent. Applicant must demonstrate community involvement, a strong academic background, and financial need. Applicant must be enrolled at a two-year, four-year, or graduate/professional-level, accredited educational institution. David Family Scholarship from the Oregon Student Assistance Commission: Applicant must be a resident of Clackamas, Lane, Linn, Marion, Multnomah, Washington, or Yamhill County, Oreg. First preference is to applicants entering graduate or upper-division undergraduate programs. Second preference is to applicants who are graduates of the West Linn-Wilsonville, Lake Oswego, Portland, Tigard-Tualatin, or Beaverton school districts. GPA between 2.5 and 3.5 is recommended. Frances C. Allen Fellowship: Applicant must be a woman of Native American heritage working in any graduate or pre-professional field. Graduate Fellowship in Biomedical Engineering: Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident, plan to study for a Ph.D. or Sc.D. degree, and be attending an institution in the U.S. Howard K. Rock Scholarship from Alaska Village Initiatives, Inc.: Applicant must be an Alaskan native. Applicant must submit transcripts, essay and three letters of recommendation Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund Scholarship: Applicant must be a woman over age 25 who is from a developing country and who is studying at an accredited U.S. institution. Applicant must demonstrate financial need and plan to return to her home country within two years. Technical Minority Scholarship Program: Applicant must be a minority student.
