KGI Sr. VP Greg Dewey to Discuss Life Sciences Innovation at Singapore Science Centre

T. Gregory

CLAREMONT, Calif., March 21, 2008 – Keck Graduate Institute (KGI) today announced that T. Gregory Dewey, PhD, KGI’s senior vice president for academic affairs, dean of faculty and Robert E. Finnigan professor, will discuss the state of the American life sciences industry at Science in the Café, Singapore Science Centre at 7 pm SST on March 27, 2008.

“Recent published accounts have presented a dire picture of innovation and competitiveness in American industry,” said Dewey. “But basic discovery in the life sciences is actually progressing at an unprecedented pace. The problem is discoveries in the laboratory aren’t becoming commercialized as much as they could be because of certain economic models and a regulatory environment that inhibits innovation.”

Dewey’s talk, “Below the Gathering Storm: Discovery and Innovation in the Life Sciences Industry,” will discuss the ongoing advances and discoveries in the life sciences as well as the nature of constraints on innovation and possible solutions for promoting innovation.

Dewey will be traveling to Singapore as part of a delegation from The Claremont Colleges conducting a historic visit to Asia March 27-April 5, 2008. The delegation will include presidents and other top officials of The Claremont Colleges plus members of the boards of trustees and the CEO of the Claremont University Consortium.

The purpose of the trip is to provide information about The Claremont Colleges; promote the consortium as a premiere destination for undergraduate and graduate education in the United States; and encourage dialogue and collaborative relationships with Asian universities.

In addition to Singapore, the delegation will visit Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing. Dewey and KGI Assistant Vice President Matt Reed will also be making stops in Taiwan to meet with academic officials.

Dewey’s research and teaching are in the fields of biophysics and computational biology. A central focus of his present research is the mathematical modeling of complex biological phenomena. He has worked on a range of scientific problems including theoretical sequence-structure relationships in proteins and RNA and dynamic modeling of gene expression.
