Dear KGI Community,
The KGI COVID-19 Task Force met this morning and discussed current news and information. Below is a summary of important updates:
Institutional Health We have been monitoring keycard access to all of our KGI buildings to ensure safety and social distancing. Due to the lack of activity in 1North Indian Hill, starting Tuesday, we will be turning off access to anyone without an office in the building to redirect our resources to 215, 517, and 535.
As a reminder, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has issued guidance on wearing face coverings while performing essential activities. We are strongly encouraging everyone to follow these guidelines if you are coming on campus. Advice from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention can be found here.
Reporting Protocol On March 30th, we issued communications protocols to provide detailed information about how KGI will notify our community of a positive diagnosis (both on-campus and those who have been off-campus since March 12th). We received a self-identification from a student after that communication. Dean Martinez made contact with the individual and was able to gather valuable information. The student was last on campus March 13th and unknowingly spent time with two individuals who tested positive for the virus after their contact. The student was contacted by their doctor to take a test and received a positive diagnosis on March 25th. They have been isolating since they discovered the diagnosis and began showing symptoms on March 27th. The student confirmed they have not had any contact with KGI faculty, staff, or students since March 13th. The student is doing well and will continue to communicate with Dean Martinez for resources and support as needed.
Institutional Support We have had several requests from students who need financial assistance to navigate this crisis. In the last week, KGI has awarded $8,600 from the Student Success Fund and $3,000 from the Simonian Student Success Fund to help students with emergency funding during this critical time. If you would like to contribute, click here and choose the “Student Success Fund” as the fund designation.
Institutional Updates The summer program committee is meeting regularly and will have a decision this week regarding taking courses online. We hope to provide communication regarding these courses next Monday.
The return to work date has not changed from LACDPH, but we expect they will be revising their order soon. At this time, KGI does not have a definite return to work date. As the order is revised, we will communicate our evaluation protocols, return to work criteria, and provide appropriate notice to our community.
Kelly Esperias, Vice President of Institutional Development and Partnerships
