Dear KGI Community,

The KGI COVID-19 Task Force had their weekly meeting today, and below are important updates:

Institutional Health

With many members of our community vacating KGI’s campus for the past 17 days, we are updating our communication protocols for self-reporting any possible COVID-19 diagnosis within the KGI and TCC community. It is important to note that the below information is valid for confirmed cases by the health department, not presumptive cases.

Reporting incidents of a positive COVID-19 diagnosis within the KGI Community

KGI Employee or Student Off-Campus

  • If you have been off campus for the past 14 days and have received a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis, please consider self-reporting to KGI. Employees can notify Human Resources at hr@kgi.edu, and students should notify Student Affairs at Student_Affairs@kgi.edu. Please know your confidentiality is protected, and you will not be identified by name to anyone in the community as having contracted COVID-19. Once notified, Human Resources or Student Affairs will send an email asking if there has been contact with any KGI employee or student in the past 14 days to determine if we need to notify others to self-isolate. They will also provide you information, support, and resources.
    • We will send an email notification to our community that there is a positive diagnosis within the KGI Community after each weekly task force meeting and indicate whether there was a potential exposure with employees or students in the past 14 days.

KGI Employee or Student On-Campus

  • If you have been on campus for the past 14 days and have received a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis, you are requested to notify KGI immediately. Employees should notify Human Resources at hr@kgi.edu, and students should notify Student Affairs at Student_Affairs@kgi.edu. Please know your confidentiality is protected, and you will not be identified by name to anyone in the community as having contracted COVID-19. Once notified, Human Resources or Student Affairs will send an email asking if there has been contact with any KGI employee or student in the past 14 days. They will also provide you information, support, and resources. Additionally, we will work with the Los Angeles Department of Public Health to follow their guidance on additional cleaning recommended and notification of potential exposure to employees or students.
    • We will send an announcement to our community that there is a positive diagnosis within the KGI Community through our Clery reporting system. Under the Clery Act, institutions provide notifications to the campus community to help individuals take proper precautions to protect their health and safety.
    • We will work with the LADPH to help identify potential exposure with employees or students in the past 14 days on campus.
    • We will send an email to the KGI community giving more information as appropriate.

KGI Employee or Student (Online)

  • If there is a KGI employee or student who mentions during a class or meeting online, information regarding exposure to a confirmed case or believes they have the virus, please send the individual our contact information. Employees can notify Human Resources at hr@kgi.edu, and students should notify Student Affairs at Student_Affairs@kgi.edu.
    • After you have provided the contact information for self-identification, please contact either office listed above to ensure that they have connected with the individual.

Communication protocol for incidents of a positive COVID-19 diagnosis within TCC Community

Each TCC campus is responsible for notifying its institutional community first. KGI will receive notification through the TCC Emergency Response Team.

TCC Employee or Student Off-Campus

  • If information is received from a TCC campus of a positive diagnosis, KGI will send out an announcement after our weekly Monday morning Task Force meetings. Individuals in this reporting classification will have been off campus for a considerable amount of time, and their separation from employees or students would be beyond the 14 day isolation period.

TCC Employee or Student On-Campus

  • If information is received from a TCC campus of a positive diagnosis on campus, KGI will send an announcement to our community.
  • KGI will work with the reporting institution to determine if any of our employees or students may have been exposed.

Institutional Infrastructure

We are committed to maintaining our essential operations at KGI and returning to campus as soon as it is deemed safe by the local government.

  • We are aware the White House has extended its previous 15-day distancing guidelines another 30 days (expiring on April 30, 2020).
KGI has been consulting both the state and county recommendations as guidelines for our temporary telecommuting policy. We are awaiting an update either from the Governor’s Office on the current executive order or the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health’s current order, which is valid through April 19, 2020. If the order’s expiration date changes, we will notify our community of the new expected return to work date.

As a reminder, the KGI Coronavirus website provides all updates and resources in one centralized location for your convenience.

Be Well,
Kelly Esperias
Vice President of Institutional Development and Partnerships
