This course emphasizes the vital role of communication in contemporary pharmacy practice. Students are evaluated in both oral and written formats. Course content includes: An overview of cultural competence important for pharmacists; study of professional interpersonal communication, verbal and nonverbal communication strategies, and patient counseling. In addition, students will become certified to administer and educate patients on immunizations, learn how to advise patients on over-the-counter products as well as acquire introductory characteristics of the first approximately150 drugs from the top 300 drugs through self-study. Student communication and patient counseling skills will also be introduced and assessed using objective structured clinical exam (OSCE) format.
