Professional Development I

Professional Development I and II represent a sequential course that will introduce students to a variety of topics to enable genetic counselors to excel in their careers and provide students with a foundation in genetic counseling professional development. Students will explore career options, and genetics-related professional societies, practice writing CVs and cover letters, learn job interview techniques and negotiation skills, prepare to obtain ABGC certification and state licensure, gain professional self-awareness, and understand the importance of self-reflection and balancing professional and personal demands. Students will also obtain tools for the future – including exploration of position statements and public policy issues, funding and publishing research work, preparing for public speaking and presentations, and understanding the broader healthcare system (billing, coding, career ladders and reviews) as well as clinical program development and management.(GENE 410)
