This course approaches geriatrics from a holistic systems perspective. The course will teach geriatric principles from multiple disciplines, equipping future pharmacists to help the older population and their caretakers navigate through a complex system. The current geriatric delivery system is segmented, making it difficult for the older population to receive care for all their needs. This course will prepare future pharmacists to serve as an accessible and knowledgeable healthcare provider able to provide education and direction tailored to each unique individuals’ needs. This course will teach the importance of further tailoring the care of the older population based on level of socialization, care, housing, and so on. Since a person’s needs extend beyond pharmacy, this course will take a holistic approach to teaching the management of older populations. Topics, taught through the lens of a pharmacist providing continuity of care, will include dental, social, cultural, economic, abuse, caregiver support, mental health, prevention, and benefits.
