This elective course builds upon concepts introduced in Pharmacotherapy and Medication Management to provide students with an in-depth review and expansion of knowledge regarding the management of cardiovascular pharmacotherapy. The class is focused on evaluating scientific literature in the area of cardiology and applying knowledge gained from clinical trials to approaches in patient care. The course will present new and emerging data, exploring clinical trials that may impact standard of care. Students will have an opportunity to discuss how clinical trials are used in the development of national practice guidelines as well as compare and contrast different guidelines and their approaches to the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Students will engage in discussions on topics where controversies exist amongst experts and explore clinical trial data that seem contradictory. Learning techniques include class discussion, formulation of a comprehensive medication management plan for patient cases, evaluation of primary literature, and student presentations.
