This combined elective course is designed to educate in the areas of (1) ambulatory oncology and (2) antimicrobial stewardship. Recent trends and newer therapies in cancer care are geared toward managing patients in an ambulatory setting. Here, pharmacists are responsible for oral and intravenous chemotherapy education, chemotherapy side effect management, and interpretation of cancer literature. Communicating through writing and public speaking and patient education are skills necessary to interact with both patients and other healthcare providers in direct patient care. The first half of this course is designed to develop these oral and written communication skills in the student pharmacist that are necessary to deliver effective patient-centered pharmaceutical care to the ambulatory oncology patient.
