The Professional Development course series is designed for second-year genetic counseling students to prepare for their entry into the genetic counseling workforce, aiming to introduce a variety of topics to support growth, development, and success in the field.
Over the course of the year, students will take Professional Development I and II. We will discuss topics relevant to practicing genetic counselors, such as billing and reimbursement, integration of genomics into medical records, public health genomics, access to genetic health services, genetics laboratories and industry career paths, and more. We will focus on fostering individual student growth through learning about resume and CV development, cover letters, interviewing techniques, choosing your first role, and negotiation strategies.
In Professional Development I (PD1), we will specifically focus on ways to engage with the genetic counseling profession as a new graduate. The goal for PD1 is to broaden your perspective of the genetic counseling profession, and introduce you to the various aspects of the healthcare system in which genetic counselors play a role. We will learn about genetics-related professional societies, volunteering and engagement with the profession at large, and strategies for optimizing your voluntary commitments. We will also focus on the importance of maintaining professional self-awareness, and understand the importance of self-reflection and balancing professional and personal demands over the course of your career.
Next semester, in Professional Development II (PD2), we will focus on career-oriented learning, including topics relating to your job search as well as certification and licensure requirements. More details are provided in the PD2 syllabus.
