Art Hewig is the Vice President of Biologics Process Development at Gilead Sciences in Oceanside, CA, where he currently leads a >150 member organization of scientists and engineers to deliver early stage, late stage, and life cycle management assets of Gilead’s multi-modality biologics portfolio and advance the development of innovative technologies. He is responsible for overseeing the development of Gilead’s diverse biologics portfolio from the research collaboration stage to commercialization. This includes Cell Line Development, Upstream Process Development, Downstream Process Development, Formulation/Drug Product Development, and Analytical Operations including Quality Control. Previous to this role, Hewig worked at Amgen for 19 years in bioprocess development across all phases of commercialization. He has a proven track record of developing robust drug substance processes for a wide range of modalities including mAbs, biosimilars, BiTEs, bispecifics, and siRNA programs, and a demonstrated ability to rapidly learn and adapt to the changing needs of the multi-modality pipeline, including the establishment of modular platforms. He has also driven innovation and technology efforts to transform biomanufacturing strategies aligned with broader strategic goals. Hewig received his doctorate in Chemical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and BS/MS in Chemical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
