The time has come again to celebrate and recognize the accomplishments and contributions of our LGBTQIA+ graduating students! The Queer Resource Center (QRC) invites all 7C graduating seniors and graduate students of The Claremont Colleges to participate in the annual 2019 Lavender Graduation. In consideration of historical and recent happenings toward the LGBTQIA+ community, the theme of this year’s graduation is “Existence is Resistance.” The late queer and performance theorist, Jose Esteban Munoz once said,“We must dream and enact new and better pleasures, other ways of being in the world, and ultimately new worlds,” framed as a way to highlight our past and present existences that build towards a queer future.
The history of Lavender Graduation dates back to 1995 originally led by Dr. Ronni Sanlo at the University of Michigan. The graduation was a way to bring visibility and acknowledgement of the unique experiences and challenges that LGBTQIA+ students experience in college and to focus on the hopes and dreams students have for each other. This year, the QRC of The Claremont Colleges seeks to do the same by encouraging graduating students to participate in this year’s celebration and rise together to honor the visibility and representation of diverse LGBTQIA+ students on our campuses.
This year’s graduation travels to Pomona College and will be held on Friday, April 26 from 6–8pm in Little Bridges Auditorium followed by a reception in the Carolyn Lyon Garden. Participating graduates will receive a lavender sash for their participation, a certificate recognizing their scholarly achievement, as well as a graduation gift from the QRC. Additionally, this celebration seeks to recognize outstanding LGBTQIA+ and Allied staff and faculty who will also be honored with awards for their contribution and dedication to LGBTQIA+ students at The Claremont Colleges. In addition, all 7C community members are invited to attend and no formal RSVP is required – simply show up as you are and everyone is welcomed.
This year’s Keynote Speaker is none other than renowned Bamby Salcedo, a Latina Transgender Speaker and Activist and founding President of the TransLatin@ Coalition.
Graduating students should complete a Lavender Graduation 2019 application by Friday, April 12 by 5 p.m. in order to be guaranteed an embroidered graduation sash; applications submitted after this date may not be guaranteed an embroidered sash.
