Various metabolic shifts occur within mitochondria prior to and in response to disease states, including cancer, Alcoholic Liver Disease and Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, obesity, and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s Disease. These shifts can include changes in mitochondrial dynamics (fusion/fission), biogenesis, respiration, redox state, and various other parameters. These changes can drive extreme physiological change and altered phenotypic expression.
The goal of this dissertation is to explore the impact mitochondrial adaptation has on diseases of metabolic origin. Different insults to mitochondria could drive change that is positive in the short term, but deleterious over a longer duration. Thus, the consequences of mitochondrial adaptation must be further investigated.
