About Maria
Maria Filippou-Frye, MBS ’14, was born and raised in Cyprus and attended medical school at the University of Crete in Greece. Upon graduation, she started a research fellowship in Neurosurgery at the University of California, Los Angeles. There, she was introduced to clinical trials in traumatic brain injury and intraventricular and intracerebral hematomas. Filippou-Frye wanted to enhance her knowledge and experience in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry, so she attended the MBS program at KGI.
Upon graduation, Filippou-Frye briefly joined a start-up venture capital firm and subsequently was hired as a Clinical Research Manager in the Department of Psychiatry at Stanford University. Her passion for training the next generation of clinical research and business professionals led to her position as an Instructor at the UCSC Extension certification programs in Clinical Trial Management and Business Administration, where she has taught since 2017. Filippou-Frye joined Genentech in 2020 as a Country Study Manager within U.S. clinical operations, leading an agile team that manages the operations in lymphoma. In 2021, she joined the oncology-hematology clinical science team and conducted clinical trials in lymphoma and enterprise-wide initiatives.
Filippou-Frye is married and has a beautiful and very active 3-year-old boy. She enjoys cooking (mostly Greek food) and reading books. She is a certified dance teacher who taught dance for five years during medical school. One of her most unforgettable experiences was participating in the closing ceremony of the 2004 Olympic Games organized in Athens, where she was part of one of the dancing groups.
