Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw is the founder and Chairperson of Biocon, India’s largest publicly listed biopharmaceutical enterprise, established through a growing partnership with KGI. As a Center of Excellence for Advanced Learning in Biosciences, Biocon develops high-quality talent that address the needs of the biotechnology sector in India.
Named among Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world, Mazumdar-Shaw is recognized as a global leader in science and innovation. Other notable honors include rankings on some of the world’s most recognized lists from Fierce Biotech, Forbes, Fortune, Scientific American, and Foreign Policy magazine.
In 2022, she was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE), Scotland’s National Academy, that established in 1783 for the advancement of learning and useful knowledge.
Mazumdar-Shaw holds a BS with zoology honors from Bangalore University and a master’s degree in malting and brewing from Ballarat College, Melbourne University. She has also received several honorary degrees from colleges and universities worldwide for her pre-eminent contributions in the field of biotechnology.
Mazumdar-Shaw’s philanthropic initiatives are directed at making a difference in the lives of marginalized communities through Biocon Foundation’s primary healthcare centers, telemedicine initiatives, health awareness programs, public health and sanitation initiatives, and preventive screenings for oral and cervical cancer.
She and her husband, John, also established a scholarship fund for students in KGI’s Master of Science in Community Medicine program through a million-dollar gift.
