BioMarin is a leading biopharmaceutical firm focused on developing first-in-class or best-in-class treatments for patients with rare (orphan) genetic diseases. The company was founded in 1997, employs 2,000 associates, and currently operates in the United States, South America, Asia, and Europe. In 2014, BioMarin earned revenues of $751 million with five approved and marketed products: Vimizim®, Naglazyme®, Aldurazyme®, Firdapse®, and Kuvan®. BioMarin’s headquarters in Novato, CA, manages its business processes and logistics operation. BioMarin is interested in developing and implementing a supply chain visibility platform to provide shipment level data collection from air, truck, and parcel carriers. BioMarin is looking to improve supply chain visibility in order to optimize their logistics operations. This will be done by analyzing carrier metrics, standardized internal performance metrics, and lane utilization metrics. The ideal platform would provide a holistic view of all supply chain activities, including: costs, end-to-end inventory visibility across multiple supply chain nodes, global in-transit inventory with dynamic estimated time of arrival (ETAs), and contextual reporting to provide quick access to supply chain status. With five approved products and many potential drugs in the pipeline, The BioMarin Supply Chain Visibility TMP team researched promising solutions and vendors based on their relevant experience in the life sciences industry, functionality, cost, and potential for successful long- term business partnerships. The team compiled reports and summaries of each of the supply chain solutions to assist BioMarin in identifying a suitable supply chain visibility platform. The team also facilitated non-disclosure agreements between select vendors and BioMarin in order to complete documentation of business requirements as well as reconcile validation specifications. Completion of this project will allow BioMarin to proceed with project implementation, which includes a pilot project shipping lane. Finally, the team has produced information that will enable BioMarin to select an appropriate supply chain visibility platform that meets their business needs,
