What You'll Learn
At KGI, we designed our full-time MSPA program to integrate rigorous classroom learning with hands-on clinical experience, preparing you for a dynamic career in healthcare.
Over the course of seven semesters, our curriculum develops your medical knowledge, diagnostic abilities, and professional competencies through a combination of coursework and clinical practice. You gain expertise in:
- Disease and patient management across a broad range of specialties, including family medicine, internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, and more.
- Patient assessment, focusing on advanced interviewing, physical examination, and diagnostic reasoning skills.
- Pharmacotherapeutics, building a strong foundation in medication management, safety, and evidence-based therapeutic decision-making.
- Clinical and technical procedures, including the interpretation of diagnostic data and application of clinical findings in patient care.
KGI’s Master of Science in Physician Associate Studies curriculum includes 84 credit hours of didactic coursework and 40 credit hours of supervised clinical practice experiences across diverse healthcare settings. You must complete all 124 credit hours to earn the MSPA degree.
The program consists of a 16-month didactic phase, followed by a 12-month clinical phase, featuring a capstone project and eight six-week clinical rotations across various disciplines and healthcare environments.
You can select an elective rotation tailored to your interests, along with seven core clinical disciplines. After each clinical rotation, you return to campus for callback day activities, which include written and practical examinations and case presentations.
Upon completing the physician associate studies program, you will have the competencies and learning outcomes essential for successful entry into PA practice.
The development of these competencies and outcomes was guided by:
- The American Academy of Physician Associates (AAPA) Competencies for the Physician Associate Profession (revised 2012)
- The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Core Entrustable Professional Activities for Entering Residency (2014)
- The Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA) Proposed Entrustable Activities for PA Graduates (2017)
- The PAEA’s Core Competencies for New Physician Associate Graduates (2018)

Accreditation Status
The Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) has granted Accreditation-Provisional status to the Keck Graduate Institute Physician Associate Program sponsored by Keck Graduate Institute.
Accreditation-Provisional is an accreditation status granted when the plans and resource allocation, if fully implemented as planned, of a proposed program that has not yet enrolled students appear to demonstrate the program’s ability to meet the ARC-PA Standards or when a program holding Accreditation-Provisional status appears to demonstrate continued progress in complying with the Standards as it prepares for the graduation of the first class (cohort) of students.
Accreditation-Provisional does not ensure any subsequent accreditation status. It is limited to no more than five years from the matriculation of the first class.

How to Apply to the Physician Associate Program
To be considered for admission to the PA program, you must meet these requirements:
- Completed CASPA Application: Submit an online CASPA application, including the KGI-specific supplemental questions within CASPA.
- Minimum GPA Requirements:
- Overall GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Science GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Direct Patient Care Experience: At least 1,000 hours of paid, hands-on patient care experience.
- Three letters of recommendation:
- The first letter must be from a healthcare provider who is a Physician Associate (PA), Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), or Nurse Practitioner (NP).
- The second letter must be from one of these professionals:
- A second healthcare reference can be another provider or healthcare professional (e.g., Registered Nurse (RN), Respiratory Therapist (RT)).
- An academic reference, such as a professor or academic advisor.
- A research supervisor or lead from a project in which you had significant participation.
- The third letter is your choice. You may choose one letter from any of the above categories or from a volunteer supervisor.
- Letters will not be accepted from personal friends, family friends, or relatives.
- All three letters must be requested through CASPA at the time of application and completed by December 31 of the application year. The program does not accept letters sent directly to KGI.
- Admission Interview (conducted online by invitation only)
- English language proficiency required for international students only. Please see the international student page.
Admitted students must submit two non-refundable deposits of $750 each to secure their place in the program.
MSPA Program Prerequisites
Prerequisite courses include:
- Human Anatomy and Physiology with Lab (two courses)
- Microbiology
- Medical Terminology
- General or Inorganic Chemistry with Lab
- Organic or Biochemistry
- Statistics
To be considered for admission, you must complete the above courses with a grade of C or higher from a regionally or nationally accredited institution. All prerequisites must have been completed within 10 years of the application deadline.
You may have up to two outstanding prerequisites (no more than 8 semesters or 12 quarter hours total) at the time of application. All remaining requirements must be completed by June 15 of the enrollment year.
Direct Patient Care Experience
At the time of application, a minimum of 1,000 hours of direct patient care experience (PCE) completed within the past five years is required.
Direct patient care experiences include:
- Paramedic
- Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
- Dietitian
- Respiratory Therapist (RT)
- Radiologic Technician
- Medical Assistant (back office hours only)
- Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Registered Nurse (RN), or Master’s-Prepared Nurse (MSN)
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
- Physical Therapist (PT)
- Occupational Therapist (OT)
- Surgical Technician
- Clinical Research Assistant (only hours spent directly interacting with and caring for patients)
- Medical Scribe
- Pharmacist
- Phlebotomist
Unacceptable Experiences Include:
- Work in optometry, podiatry, veterinary, or dental settings
- Administrative roles in hospitals or offices
- Positions such as lifeguard, aesthetician, or home caregiver
- Non-clinical research or laboratory-only experience
Additional Guidelines:
- Hours obtained through volunteer, shadowing, or training programs (e.g., CNA, MA, medical school, or PA school) do not count toward patient care experience.
- Hours completed after graduation, such as residency hours, are accepted.
- Direct patient care hours must be completed in the United States, U.S. territories, or with U.S.-based organizations (e.g., the military or Peace Corps). Acceptance of organization-based hours is at the discretion of KGI.
- The program evaluates applicants' duties to determine which hours qualify as PCE. If descriptions are unclear, KGI reserves the right to adjust the accepted hours accordingly.
