KGI Welcomes Gus Buthman as AVP and Legal Counsel

Gus Buthman joined Keck Graduate Institute as the inaugural Assistant Vice President and Legal Counsel, effective July 1, 2025. Buthman brings extensive experience in practicing law in higher education, as well as governance and regulatory experience. He most recently served Administrative Judge at the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. 

“I'm excited and honored to be selected to serve as legal counsel for KGI,” said Buthman. “I look forward to joining an elite team of faculty and professionals dedicated to advancing the next generation of leaders in biotech, healthcare, and life sciences and to enriching society with groundbreaking research.” 

Buthman will report directly to President Mohamed Abousalem, and will provide strategic legal advice and solutions to KGI’s leadership in relation to operational functions, administrative areas, and external engagements. 

“With his strong legal background and demonstrated commitment to client service and the highest ethical standards, Gus is a welcome addition to KGI’s leadership,” said President Abousalem. “As our first in-house legal counsel, Gus’ arrival marks a significant step in the Institute’s path to maturity as we develop our legal knowledge base that will support our growth.” 

Prior to serving as Administrative Judge, Buthman served as a staff attorney with the University of Oklahoma for eight years, where he practiced across all aspects of higher education. Additionally, Buthman has served as trial attorney in private practice. He holds a Bachelor of Liberal Arts from St. John’s College and a Doctor of Law (JD) from Oklahoma City University School of Law.
