Animesh Ray’s illustrious career researching molecular and systems biology includes 25 years at Keck Graduate Institute, where he is the W.M. Keck Professor of Systems, Computational, and Molecular Biology. His new book “Darwin’s Solutions” explores how today’s biomedical innovations in targeted cancer chemotherapy, gene editing, enzyme design using AI, and other advancements can be traced to Charles Darwin’s framing of evolution.
The book is broken up into three parts –– Part I dives into the central ideas of Darwinian evolution in a digestible way for the reader, and Part II dives deep into seminal discoveries in biomedical sciences and includes interviews with physician researchers and Ray's personal reminiscences. Part III presents an invitation to the reader to look at the math behind mutation, selection, and fitness.
"Here I have tried telling the untold story of how Darwinian logic became one of the most powerful engines of discovery in modern medicine and trillion-dollar biotechnology," Ray said.
Ray has also launched a podcast discussing the book. You can listen to the podcast on Spotify.
