For Angela Chong, returning to school after decades away was a goal that seemed out of reach. While balancing family responsibilities and a full-time job with the San Francisco Department of Public Health, Chong didn't think earning a master’s degree was possible until she discovered KGI's fully online Master of Health Administration (MHA) program.
“I feel that KGI gave me a second chance to pursue a dream that I had put on hold for many years,” Chong said. “As someone over 50 years old, I never thought I would have the opportunity to return to school and earn a master's degree. With a family to support and a daughter attending college, I always prioritized my family's needs before my own educational goals.”
Chong, who graduated from KGI in May, noted that while the flexibility of the MHA program was a major selling point, the opportunity to collaborate and learn from classmates with different backgrounds and experiences has helped broaden her understanding of healthcare administration and leadership.
“One thing that surprised me was how supportive and connected the online learning environment could be,” Chong said. “Before starting the program, I wondered whether I would feel isolated as an online student. Instead, I found a strong community of classmates, professors, mentors, and advisors who genuinely care about student success.”
Chong was a recipient of a scholarship funded by Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, founder and executive chairperson of Biocon Limited, who received an honorary degree from KGI at the 2026 commencement ceremony. Chong said the scholarship not only provided financial support but also gave her the confidence to believe that earning a master's degree was attainable.
“I would like to sincerely thank Ms. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw for her generosity and vision –– her scholarship has had a life-changing impact on my educational journey,” Chong said. “As an adult learner who never thought I would have the chance to earn a master's degree, this scholarship gave me hope and opened a door that I believed had closed. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity and for her investment in students like me who are striving to make a difference in their communities.”
With Chong having now completed her goal, she encouraged others who may be in a similar position as she was to consider KGI.
“I would tell them not to let age, time, or financial challenges stop them from pursuing their educational goals. If you have the desire and determination to continue learning, KGI provides the resources, support, and opportunities to help you succeed,” Chong said.
“The faculty, mentors, advisors, and fellow students create an environment where you are encouraged to grow both personally and professionally. I hope to use what I learn to contribute to projects that positively impact my community. I would encourage anyone considering KGI to take that step. You may be surprised by what is possible.”
