Joseph Mashinchi
Joseph Mashinchi, DMSc, MPAS, PA-C is a Physician Assistant with extensive experience in orthopedic surgery, spanning pediatric and adult patient populations. Mashinchi currently practices at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland in pediatric orthopedics, where he cares for patients with conditions ranging from congenital abnormalities to fractures and sports-related injuries. His responsibilities include managing outpatient and inpatient care, assisting in surgical procedures, and performing fracture reduction and casting. He is known for his patient-centered approach, clinical efficiency, and strong procedural skill set.
Prior to UCSF, Mashinchi worked at NorthBay Health, where he expanded his expertise across multiple orthopedic subspecialties, including general orthopedics, sports medicine, trauma, hand and wrist, and foot and ankle care. At NorthBay, Mashinchi took on significant leadership responsibilities, managing and coordinating an orthopedic hand surgery clinic while also contributing to data analysis of patient volume and clinical operations. Notably, he led the design and implementation of an Orthopedic Urgent Care during the COVID-19 pandemic, improving patient access to timely musculoskeletal care. His role also included onboarding and training medical staff, participating in patient experience initiatives, and driving workflow optimization to enhance both efficiency and quality of care.
He began his orthopedic career at Adventist Health St. Helena, where he assisted in hip and knee total joint replacement surgeries, as well as hand and wrist procedures. During this time, he gained experience in inpatient rounding, outpatient clinic management, and perioperative patient care, building a strong foundation in both surgical and non-surgical orthopedics.
In addition to his orthopedic work, Mashinchi has experience in emergency medicine, having served as a provider in a Level II Trauma Center at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto, California. There, he managed a wide range of acute conditions and performed bedside procedures such as suturing, central line placement, lumbar punctures, and paracentesis. This experience further strengthened his ability to deliver high-quality care in fast-paced, high-acuity environments.
Beyond clinical practice, Mashinchi has demonstrated a strong commitment to leadership and innovation. He has led initiatives to improve clinical workflows, enhance communication across care teams, and develop protocols that improve patient safety and outcomes. His work included creating onboarding programs, refining postoperative care instructions, and implementing systems to ensure timely follow-up on diagnostic results.
He earned his Doctorate of Medical Science from Southern Illinois University, where his training emphasized healthcare administration, global health, and healthcare law. He completed his Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies at the University of St. Francis in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from California State University, Stanislaus.
