Experiential Pharmacy Education

The Office of Experiential Education (OEE) at the KGI School of Pharmacy oversees experiential learning which is an essential part of the PharmD curriculum. The OEE team, along with preceptors and partners in various settings, aims to provide high quality hands-on professional and patient care experiences allowing students to utilize, reinforce, and expand knowledge learned in the classroom.

The Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE) occur in the first three professional years of the PharmD program. IPPEs are comprised of two rotations providing a total of 300 hours of direct pharmacy experience, in community pharmacy practice and institutional pharmacy practice.

The Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) occur in the fourth professional year of the PharmD program. Students complete six immersive 6-week rotations totaling 1,440 hours of pharmacy practice experience across a range of practice areas. APPEs include advance community practice, ambulatory care, acute general medicine, institutional hospital practice, direct patient care rotations, and elective rotations in specialized areas such as critical care, infectious diseases, oncology, pediatrics, psychiatry, home infusion, transitions of care, management, and pharmaceutical industry, among others.

Preceptor Benefits

Library Access

Preceptors who actively participate in the KGI experiential program will be provided access to The Claremont Colleges electronic library resources including online journal access and interlibrary loan.

Affiliate Faculty Appointment

Curriculum vitae and application must be submitted for consideration. Affiliate faculty are expected to precept a minimum of two KGI students per year. Affiliate faculty will be invited to participate in campus events, community outreach events such as health fairs, and student mentoring programs.

Continuing Education Opportunities

Preceptors will have access to educational programs including preceptor development, asynchronous independent study and live continuing education programs.

Preceptors play a vital role in ensuring students are practice-ready by observing and evaluating their performance on Curricular Outcomes and Entrustable Professional Activities (COEPA). This webinar will introduce preceptors to COEPA and EPA target levels of entrustment scales used to evaluate learners on Introductory and Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences.
