Benefits of the Orphan Drug Act for Rare Disease Treatments

TuftScope, a journal of health, ethics and policy at Tufts University, has published a paper by three KGI students—Boris Gites, Mona Chughtai and Jessica Chang—plus Professor M. Ian Philips, director of KGI’s Center for Rare Disease Therapies, on the positive changes brought about by the Orphan Drug Act to combat rare diseases.

FDA Launches Orphan Drug Workshop at KGI

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced the launch of an orphan drug workshop series-an opportunity for biotechnology companies, pharmaceutical firms, academics and other interested parties to spend two days creating applications for orphan status designation, under the guidance of staff from FDA's Office of Orphan Products Development (OOPD). The first workshop is planned for Feb. 25-26, 2010, hosted by the Center for Rare Disease Therapies at Keck Graduate Institute (KGI) in Claremont, Calif.

Three Keck Graduate Institute students are gaining invaluable field experience this summer through internships sponsored by KGI's Center for Rare Disease Therapies. Sonali Talele and Aditya Kelkar are interning at the Food and Drug Administration in the Office of Orphan Products Development (OOPD) in Washington, DC, while Brent Thompson is working in Scientific & Regulatory Affairs at the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), also located in the capitol.
