Company: BioMarin

Liaison(s): Michael Vigarino

BioMarin is a leader in developing and commercializing innovative biopharmaceuticals for rare diseases with genetic causes. It is a globally operating, rapidly growing company, which has seen a 5x overall volume increase in the past six years. As such, the company has started the process transformation journey to improve operational efficiency. The business has identified the Order to Cash (OTC) end-to-end process as a critical operation to meet the demands placed on Commercial Operations, Technical Operations, Finance, and Treasury.

This Team Master’s Project focuses on researching, benchmarking, and developing a plan for process and training documentation practices for OTC. Centralizing documentation allows employees to have visibility and access to all documents in the OTC department. In addition to this centralization, standardizing documentation practices will result in repeatability and scalability within BioMarin as it grows.

The KGI team was tasked with completing three deliverables: a documentation matrix, centralized solution, and governance plan. The documentation matrix focused on developing a tool to quantify completeness and effectiveness of documentation currently residing in OTC. The centralized solution entailed providing visibility, easy access, and enhanced communication for documentation management tailored to BioMarin. The governance plan created clear responsibilities, so employees understood their role in creation, revision, and archiving of documents. With these three tools, the documentation aspect of OTC will lead to increased transactional throughput by standard process execution and centralization as BioMarin continues its rapid growth.
