Boehringer Ingelheim, BI, is a research-driven biopharmaceutical company that aims to improve the health and lives of both humans and animals. Founded in 1885, it is a top 20 pharmaceutical company with over 52,000 employees that create value through innovation. Through its business areas of Human Pharma, Animal Health, and Biopharmaceutical Contract Manufacturing, BI is focused on developing novel therapies that address unmet medical needs. This project’s scope is to create a plant capacity model of Boehringer Ingelheim’s Fremont (BIFI) for one of their platform products to identify bottlenecks and optimize the process. To help BIFI, the KGI TMP group utilized Real-Time Modeling System (RTMS) software from Emerson to create the model depicting BI’s platform process in Fremont, CA. Additionally, we built scenarios for identifying bottlenecks and potential solutions to help the BIFI team find opportunities for process improvement, higher product output, or cost reduction. The outputs of this capacity model project have the potential for use by plant managers and BIFI leadership to optimize production and make knowledgeable decisions about run time, staffing, processes, and materials.
