This course will provide the students with the underlying concepts, structure and performance in classical and developing drug delivery systems for bioactive compounds. Topics covered include the rationale behind the need for drug delivery systems, engineering of controlled drug delivery systems, implantable drug delivery systems, various configurations to overcome absorption barriers, biocompatibility, biomaterials for use in drug delivery systems, in vitro models and tissue engineering for pre‐clinical testing and critical review of several clinically relevant drug delivery systems. The students will gain an understanding of how drug delivery systems are developed and will build a foundation to categorize and evaluate drug delivery systems for specific indication.(ALS 405)
